Know Your Space

Every great simulator starts with the space. Your room dimensions, hitting position, and available clearance will help determine which equipment will work — and which options you can rule out right away.

Room Size

Measure the full length and width of your space, including where you'll stand to swing. The usable hitting area needs to comfortably accommodate your full swing — including follow-through — without hitting walls, ceiling fixtures, or other obstacles.

Width and depth directly impact your enclosure size options, your projector throw distance, and how much swing clearance you'll have on both sides.

Ceiling Height

Ceiling height is one of the most critical measurements in your build. It determines which enclosures and overhead launch monitors will physically fit, where your projector can be mounted, and how tall your impact screen can be.

Most simulator builds require a minimum of 9 feet of ceiling clearance. Some overhead launch monitors require more. Measure carefully — and account for any ceiling beams, lights, or obstructions.

Measure from floor to the lowest obstruction — not just the ceiling height. Beams, ductwork, light fixtures, and garage door tracks can all reduce usable clearance.

Hitting Position & Handedness

Where you stand to hit — and which direction you face — determines your swing clearance on both sides and affects where your launch monitor should be positioned.

Right-Handed Only

Simpler setup — position equipment on the right side. Floor-mounted or ceiling-mounted units both work.

The launch monitor is the technology behind your simulator, tracking each shot and bringing your virtual golf experience to life. The right choice depends on your budget, how you plan to use it, where it will be installed, and the features that matter most to you.

Consideration 01 — What’s Your Budget?

Launch monitors range from affordable portable units to premium overhead systems. Setting a realistic budget helps narrow your options quickly. As you move up in price, you’re often paying for additional data, larger hitting areas, mounting flexibility, software features, and convenience.

More data isn’t automatically better. For the vast majority of golfers, accurate ball data is all you need for a great simulator experience. Don’t pay for extra metrics simply because they’re available.

Consideration 02 — How Will You Use It?

How you plan to use your launch monitor can quickly narrow the field. A permanent simulator room has different needs than a garage that converts back to parking.

Dedicated Simulator

A permanent setup gives you the most flexibility. Both floor-mounted and overhead launch monitors can work, depending on your budget and preferences.

Multipurpose Space

If your simulator needs to disappear when you’re done playing, consider how easily the launch monitor can be set up, removed, or stored.

Indoor + Outdoor

Want to practice in your simulator and take your launch monitor to the range? Focus on portable models designed for both environments.

Multiple Players

Family, friends, and mixed-handed golfers can make hitting area size, mounting location, and ease of switching players more important.

Consideration 03 — Floor or Ceiling Mounted?

Once you know how you’ll use your simulator, decide where you want the launch monitor to live. Both styles can deliver excellent performance, but they create different simulator experiences.

🏠 Ceiling Mounted

Installed overhead and out of the hitting area. Ideal for dedicated simulator spaces and especially convenient when both right- and left-handed golfers will play.

Manufacturer Software

Most launch monitors include or offer their own software for practice, data analysis, virtual golf, or a combination of the three.

Third-Party Software

Platforms such as GSPro can offer additional courses, online play, and a different simulation experience, but compatibility varies by launch monitor.

Subscriptions & Fees

Look beyond the initial purchase price. Some launch monitors require annual subscriptions, software licenses, or additional fees to access certain features or third-party software.

Consideration 05 — What Data Do You Need?

Every launch monitor provides the core information needed to simulate ball flight, but the amount of data available varies significantly. The question isn’t which launch monitor has the most numbers — it’s which data will actually be useful to you.

Ball Data

Metrics such as ball speed, launch angle, spin, and carry distance tell you what the ball did after impact. For many golfers primarily interested in simulator play, quality ball data provides everything they need.

Club Data

Club path, face angle, angle of attack, impact location, and other club metrics can help explain why the ball flew the way it did. These measurements become more valuable for golfers using their simulator for practice, instruction, and swing improvement.

Measured vs. Calculated Data

Not every number displayed by a launch monitor is directly measured. Some metrics may be calculated from other measurements, and what’s measured versus calculated varies by model.

What you hit into shapes the entire simulator experience. A hitting net offers a simple, flexible setup, while an enclosure and impact screen create a more immersive simulator and allow you to project the course in front of you.

Consideration 01 — Net or Enclosure?

Before worrying about screen size or materials, decide what kind of simulator you want to build. Both options work — the right choice depends on how permanent and immersive you want your setup to be.

🏹 Hitting Net

Simple, affordable, and easy to move or store. A net is a great option for practice spaces, garages, portable setups, or anyone who plans to view their simulator on a TV or monitor.

Consideration 02 — How Much Coverage Do You Need?

Your enclosure isn’t just there to hold the screen — it also needs to safely contain the shots you expect to hit. Width, height, depth, and side protection all matter.

Full Enclosure

Side walls and overhead protection provide greater coverage for mishits and are generally the best choice for a finished simulator used by golfers of different skill levels.

Screen + Limited Protection

In the right room, an impact screen can be paired with curtains, netting, or existing wall protection instead of a traditional full enclosure.

Design for the worst shot — not the best one. Think about who else will use the simulator and where a topped, pulled, pushed, or even shanked ball could go. A setup that feels safe for you may not provide enough coverage for family and guests.

Consideration 03 — What Size Should Your Screen Be?

Bigger isn’t automatically better. Your available width and ceiling height determine the screen size, but the screen’s proportions also affect the projected image and ultimately your projector choice.

Screen Size

Use the available room dimensions to determine how large your impact screen can comfortably be while leaving enough space for the enclosure and installation.

Aspect Ratio

Common projected image formats include 16:9, 16:10, and 4:3. The shape of your available screen area will influence which format makes the most sense.

Consideration 04 — How Much Depth Do You Need?

An impact screen needs room to flex when struck, and enclosure depth provides additional containment for errant shots. The amount of space required behind the screen varies by system and installation.

Shallow Enclosure

Preserves more room depth and can work well where space is limited, but may provide less side and overhead protection.

Provides greater containment and can create a more finished, immersive appearance, but requires more room depth.

Never install your impact screen flush against a wall. Impact screens need space behind them to flex and safely absorb the golf ball’s impact. 12–16 inches of clearance is typical, but always follow the manufacturer’s recommended spacing.

Consideration 05 — What Makes a Good Impact Screen?

Impact screens vary in durability, image quality, noise, and how well they absorb impact. The right screen balances how the simulator looks with how it performs.

Durability

A quality screen needs to withstand thousands of full-speed shots without excessive wear.

Image Quality

A smoother, tighter screen generally produces a cleaner projected image.

Noise

Screen construction and installation can affect how loud the ball sounds at impact.

Bounceback

Proper material and tension help absorb impact rather than sending the ball aggressively back toward the golfer.

The most expensive screen isn’t necessarily the right screen for every setup. If image quality is your priority, screen material and tension become especially important. If you’re primarily practicing, durability and impact performance may matter more.

Component 03

Projector

Projectors can be one of the most intimidating parts of building a golf simulator — but they don’t have to be. Once you understand a few key terms, choosing the right projector becomes much easier. Your screen dimensions, aspect ratio, available mounting location, room lighting, and desired resolution will all help determine the right fit.

Consideration 01 — What Size & Shape Is Your Screen?

Start with your impact screen. In a golf simulator, the goal is typically to fill the height of the screen first, then fit the image to the available width. Two measurements matter: screen dimensions and aspect ratio.

Screen Dimensions

Know the usable height and width of your impact screen. These dimensions determine the size and shape of the image you’re trying to create.

16:9 — Widescreen

The standard widescreen format. Best suited for wider simulator screens with enough room to take advantage of the full image. For a 9’ tall image: 16’ wide.

16:10 — Taller Widescreen

Slightly taller than 16:9 and often a great fit for golf simulator spaces. For a 9’ tall image: 14.4’ wide.

4:3 — Taller / More Square

Uses less width relative to its height, making it useful for narrower simulator screens. For a 9’ tall image: 12’ wide.

Don’t default to 16:9 just because it’s the standard for TVs. In a golf simulator, filling the height of your impact screen is typically the priority. Choose the aspect ratio that makes the best use of the screen and room you actually have.

Consideration 02 — Where Does the Projector Need to Go?

Once you know the image you’re trying to create, you need to determine whether the projector can produce that image from a safe mounting location. This is where throw ratio and throw distance come into play.

Throw Ratio

The relationship between the size of the projected image and the distance between the projector and screen. A lower throw ratio allows a projector to create a larger image from a shorter distance.

Throw Distance

The distance from the projector lens to the impact screen. Most golf simulator builds benefit from short-throw projectors because they can produce a large image while remaining relatively close to the screen.

Don’t buy a projector until you know where it needs to be mounted. Use your screen dimensions and the manufacturer’s projection calculator to verify the exact lens-to-screen distance before purchasing.

Consideration 03 — How Bright Does It Need to Be?

Projector brightness is measured in lumens. How much brightness you need depends largely on your screen size and how much light is in the room.

🌑 Dark / Light-Controlled Space

Dedicated simulator rooms and spaces where lighting can be controlled generally require less brightness to produce a vivid image.

✓ More projector options available at lower lumen counts.

☀ Bright / Multipurpose Space

Garages, bonus rooms, and spaces with windows or overhead lighting generally benefit from a brighter projector to prevent a washed-out image.

✓ Look for 5,000+ lumens. Laser projectors perform especially well here.

Consideration 04 — 1080p or 4K?

Resolution determines how much detail your projector can display. Both 1080p and 4K can create an excellent golf simulator experience. The right choice depends on your screen, budget, and the computer powering your simulator.

📺 1080p — Full HD

A great choice for many simulator builds. 1080p provides a sharp image while generally costing less and requiring less graphics performance from your gaming PC.

✓ Best value for most simulator builds.

🎯 4K — Ultra HD

4K provides significantly more pixels and finer image detail. The difference becomes more noticeable on large impact screens. Your PC also needs to support 4K output.

✓ Plan for a capable GPU and compatible PC to match.

A 4K projector doesn’t automatically mean you’re playing in 4K. Your computer, graphics card, simulator software, cables, and connections all need to support 4K output. Think of your projector and PC as a system.

Consideration 05 — Where & How Will You Mount It?

Ceiling Mounted

The most common choice for permanent simulator installations. Ceiling mounting keeps the projector off the floor and out of the playing area.

Floor Mounted

An option when ceiling mounting isn’t practical. Floor-mounted projectors require careful positioning and should be protected from golf balls and foot traffic.

The mathematically correct mounting location still has to work for the golfer. Consider hitting position, swing clearance, shadows, and other ceiling-mounted equipment before deciding where your projector will live.

Projector Terms Made Simple

Lumens

How much light the projector produces. More lumens generally means a brighter image.

Throw Ratio

The relationship between projected image size and the distance from the projector to the screen.

Throw Distance

The distance from the projector lens to the impact screen.

Aspect Ratio

The shape of the projected image, such as 16:9, 16:10, or 4:3.

1080p / 4K

The resolution of the image. Higher resolution means more pixels and greater image detail.

Contrast Ratio

The difference between the darkest and brightest parts of an image.

Optical Zoom

Allows you to adjust image size without physically moving the projector.

Lens Shift

Allows the projected image to be moved vertically or horizontally without moving the projector.

Keystone Correction

Digitally adjusts the shape of an image when the projector isn’t perfectly aligned with the screen.

Laser Projector

Uses a laser light source instead of a traditional lamp, providing long life, consistent performance, and minimal maintenance.

PC & Software

Your simulator software determines what you can play — and your computer determines how well it runs. Start by choosing software that’s compatible with your launch monitor, then make sure your PC has the performance to deliver the experience you want. You don’t need to understand every computer specification — we’ll focus on the ones that actually matter for golf simulation.

Consideration 01 — What Software Do You Want to Play?

Your launch monitor determines which simulator software is available to you. Before choosing a computer, decide which software you plan to run and check its recommended system requirements.

GSPro

Realistic course visuals, active development, online play, and a large community-built course library. Compatible with many popular launch monitors.

Foresight Software

FSX Play and other Foresight software are designed for compatible Foresight launch monitors and offer practice, game improvement, and simulated golf.

E6 Connect

A widely supported simulation platform offering course play, practice, and multiplayer options across many launch monitor brands.

Other Software

Some launch monitors include proprietary software or support additional third-party platforms. Always verify compatibility before choosing your launch monitor or PC.

Consideration 02 — What PC Specs Actually Matter?

You don’t need to understand every component inside a gaming PC. For golf simulation, there are four specifications worth paying attention to.

GPU — Graphics Card

The GPU is one of the most important components in a simulator PC. It renders the course, lighting, shadows, textures, and other graphics you see on screen. Higher resolutions and higher graphics settings require more GPU performance — especially important if you plan to play in 4K.

CPU — Processor

The CPU handles calculations and instructions behind the scenes. It matters, but for most simulator builds, you generally don’t need the fastest processor available. Think of it this way: GPU creates the graphics, CPU runs the underlying workload.

RAM — Memory

RAM gives your computer working space while programs are running. 16GB can be sufficient for many simulator applications, while 32GB provides additional headroom and is a good target for a new simulator PC.

SSD — Storage

Your SSD stores Windows, simulator software, courses, and other files. SSDs provide significantly faster loading than traditional hard drives. Course libraries can grow quickly, so 1TB or more is a good starting point.

Don’t shop for a simulator PC based on the words “gaming computer.” Two gaming PCs at the same price can have very different performance. Pay attention to the actual GPU, CPU, RAM, and storage specifications.

Consideration 03 — Are You Playing in 1080p or 4K?

Resolution doesn’t just affect your projector — it also determines how hard your computer has to work.

📺 1080p — Full HD

1080p requires significantly less graphics processing and allows you to build a capable simulator PC for less money. For many golf simulator setups, it’s all you need.

🎯 4K — Ultra HD

4K contains four times as many pixels as 1080p, placing substantially more demand on the graphics card. If you want native 4K with high graphics settings, plan on investing more in the GPU.

Match your PC to your projector. There’s little reason to build an expensive 4K gaming PC for a 1080p projector — and a 4K projector can’t deliver its full potential if your PC isn’t capable of running your simulator smoothly at 4K.

Consideration 04 — Minimum vs. Recommended Requirements

Minimum Requirements

The minimum hardware needed for the software to operate. Meeting these requirements may mean using lower graphics settings or accepting less consistent performance.

Recommended Requirements

The hardware the software developer recommends for a better overall experience. If you’re purchasing or building a new simulator PC, this should generally be your starting point.

Leave Some Headroom

Building a computer to barely meet today’s requirements can limit you as software, courses, and graphics continue to evolve. Some additional performance headroom can help extend the useful life of your PC.

If you’re buying a new PC, don’t build to the minimum specification. Meeting today’s recommended requirements — or slightly exceeding them — usually makes more sense than saving a little now and needing an upgrade sooner.

Consideration 05 — Desktop or Laptop?

Both can power a golf simulator, but the right choice depends largely on whether performance or portability matters more to you.

🖥 Desktop

Generally provides more performance for the money, better cooling, and greater flexibility for future upgrades. For a computer that will live permanently in a dedicated simulator, a desktop usually makes the most sense.

💻 Laptop

Portable and convenient for multipurpose spaces or golfers who want to use the same computer elsewhere. Comparable performance can cost more, and future upgrades are much more limited.

Finish Your Space

The major decisions are made. Now it’s time to bring everything together. Your hitting surface, surrounding turf, room protection, and finishing touches can make the difference between a collection of simulator equipment and a space that looks, feels, and plays like a finished golf simulator.

Consideration 01 — What Are You Hitting From?

Your hitting surface is one of the most important — and most personal — parts of your simulator. You’ll interact with it on every swing, so feel, forgiveness, durability, and comfort all matter.

Hitting Mat

A complete hitting mat combines your stance area and hitting surface into one piece. It’s a simple solution for garages, multipurpose rooms, and setups where the mat may need to be moved or stored.

Hitting Strip

A hitting strip provides a dedicated hitting surface that can be installed into a larger stance mat or surrounding turf. It’s a popular choice for permanent simulator builds and can be replaced independently as it wears.

Comfort & Injury Prevention

Not all hitting surfaces react the same way at impact. Mats that are excessively firm or grab the club too aggressively can put additional stress on your wrists, elbows, and joints — especially when you’re hitting hundreds of shots indoors.

Hitting surfaces aren’t one-size-fits-all. Consider how you swing, how often you practice, and what feels comfortable — not just which mat has the best reviews.

Consideration 02 — Do You Need Surrounding Turf?

Turf can make a simulator look finished, but it also serves an important functional purpose.

Finished Appearance

Running turf through the simulator creates a clean, continuous look and allows hitting strips, stance areas, and other components to blend into the room.

Ball Control

After the ball strikes your impact screen, it still needs somewhere to go. Turf — and the padding underneath it — helps absorb energy and slow the ball after impact. On a hard concrete floor, golf balls can bounce and roll throughout the room.

Comfort

Padding beneath the turf can also make the room more comfortable to stand and walk on while adding another layer of protection over concrete or other hard flooring.

Think about what’s underneath the turf, not just how the turf looks. The right combination of turf and padding can help control ball bounce, improve comfort, and give the entire simulator a more finished feel.

Consideration 03 — Does Your Room Need Additional Protection?

Your enclosure handles the primary hitting area, but every room is different. Walls, ceilings, windows, and other exposed areas may still need additional protection from errant shots.

Wall Protection

Padding, panels, curtains, or netting can protect exposed walls while helping create a more finished simulator environment.

Ceiling Protection

Depending on your enclosure depth, hitting position, ceiling height, and the golfers using the simulator, additional overhead protection may be worth considering.

Windows & Other Obstacles

Windows, TVs, lighting, doors, and other vulnerable areas should be considered before the first ball is hit.

Stand in your hitting position and think beyond a normal golf shot. Where could a shank, pop-up, ricochet, or topped shot go? If something expensive or breakable is in that path, protect it before you start playing.

Consideration 04 — What Will Make the Space Yours?

Once the functional pieces are in place, the rest comes down to how you want the room to look, feel, and function.

Lighting

Good lighting lets you comfortably see the hitting area without washing out the projected image. Directional or separately controlled lighting can be especially useful around the golfer while keeping excess light off the impact screen.

Storage

Club racks, ball storage, shelving, and equipment organization help keep the hitting area clean and uncluttered.

Comfort & Entertainment

Seating, TVs, speakers, and other additions can turn a dedicated simulator into a space for family, friends, and entertaining.

Finishing Touches

Wall treatments, signage, décor, and other details are where a simulator starts to feel like your space rather than simply a room with golf equipment in it.
